Philip Himberg is the Executive Director of MacDowell, the US’s oldest artist residency program. MacDowell provides 300 Fellowships year round for US and Global art makers across seven artistic disciplines. 

For 23 years, Philip served as the Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program – where he created and curated developmental labs for American, Middle Eastern and North African and East African theatre makers, as well as with Eastern European dramatists. Over the course of his tenure at Sundance, he created international exchange and residencies in Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, as well as a residency in Germany for Syrian playwrights newly arrived in the EU. He has created exchange programs with artists from Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Tunisia, and Jordan.

Philip is also a playwright, whose play PAPER DOLLS, (an adaptation of the Israeli documentary film) focused on the lives of gay Filipino caretakers and premiered in London and then Washington, DC. His other produced play, CARRY IT ON was written with and for singer/actor Maureen McGovern.  His essay, “Family Albums” is included in the anthology, “Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys.”  He was a Broadway Tony nominator for three years, former President of Theatre Communications Group, a teacher at Yale Drama School and NYU. Currently, he lives in New York with his husband and has a daughter, Fanny who is a musician and farmer in Hawaii. He is also a doctor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
