Wael Kadour is a Syrian playwright and director. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in theatre studies from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, Damascus, where he graduated in 2005.

He wrote several plays that were published in Arabic, English, French and Italian. Moreover, he directed several theatrical performances and readings of a group of writers such as Samuel Beckett, Caryl Churchill, Saadallah Wannous, and Mudar Alhaggi. Kadour co-directed with Mohamed Al Rashi his play entitled “Chronicles of a City We Never Knew” performed in France, which was later performed in Germany and Italy during 2019. He participated in a series of international theatre residencies including the World Residence at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2007, the Sundance Playwright Institute in Berlin in 2017, and The Lark Theatre in New York in 2018. Since 2016, he has been collaborating regularly with both the Collective Ma’louba at An der Ruhr Theatre in Germany and the Arab Theatre Band in Sweden.

In his plays, Wael focuses primarily on tackling the issue of the collective and individual political memory and questions in his writings the limits of reality and imagination. Additionally, he addresses the issue of artistic practices’ forced displacement caused by migrations and wars.

In 2021, he was granted the Ibsen Foundation Scholarship to support his writing and production of a play based on testimonies given by former Communist women detainees who performed the Mermaid Play at the Douma Women’s Prison in 1991.

لديه عدة مسرحيات منشورة بالعربية والانجليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية. أخرج عدة عروض مسرحية وقراءات لمجموعة من الكتّاب مثل صموئيل بيكيت، كارول تشرشل، سعدالله ونوس، مضر الحجي. تشارك مع محمد آل رشي إخراج مسرحيته “وقائع مدينة لا نعرفها” في فرنسا والتي تم تقديمها أيضاً في ألمانيا وإيطاليا خلال عام 2019. شارك في مجموعة من الإقامات الدولية للمسرح منها الإقامة العالمية في مسرح الرويال كورت بلندن 2007 وإقامة معهد ساندانس للكتاب المسرحيين في برلين 2017، وإقامة مختبر The Lark المسرحي في نيويورك 2018. منذ عام 2016، يتعاون فنياً بصورة منتظمة مع كل من تجمع مقلوبة المسرحي في مسرح An der Ruhr في ألمانيا، وفرقة المسرح العربي في السويد.

في مسرحه، ينشغل وائل في مسألة الذاكرة السياسية الجمعية والفردية ويُسائل في كتابته حدود الواقع والمتخيل، ويُعنى بمسألة الانزياح القهري للممارسة الفنية بفعل الهجرات والحروب.

في عام 2021، حصل على منحة مؤسسة إبسن لدعم كتابة وإنتاج مسرحية تقوم على شهادات معتقلات شيوعيات سابقات قمن بتقديم مسرحية حورية البحر في سجن دوما للنساء عام 1991.
